The Athenian Constitution

by Aristotle

Translated by Sir Frederic G. KenyonAbout 1 h 39 min of reading69 chapters

The Athenian Constitution is a short treatise attributed to Aristotle and recovered only in 1890, when a papyrus containing most of the text was acquired by the British Museum. Its first part traces the political history of Athens from the earliest times through the reforms of Solon, the tyranny of Peisistratus, the democracy of Cleisthenes, the age of Pericles, the oligarchic revolutions of 411 and 404 and the restoration of democracy. The second part describes the working of the Athenian state in the author's own day: the council, the assembly, the archons, the courts and the choice of officials by lot. This translation is by Sir Frederic G. Kenyon, who edited the papyrus for the Museum. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
