An opening chapter reviews every theory then current about the origin of the American peoples, from the lost tribes of Israel to Atlantis. Bancroft then works through the pre-Toltec, Toltec, Chichimec and Aztec periods of the Valley of Mexico, the eastern plateau, Michoacán and Oaxaca, the Quiché and Cakchiquel kingdoms of Guatemala and the Maya of Yucatán, drawing on the native chronicles preserved by Spanish writers.
