The first volume of Hubert Howe Bancroft's Native Races of the Pacific States, first published in the 1870s, describes the peoples of western North America who had no written records, grouped by region: the Hyperboreans of Alaska and the far north, the Columbians of the northwest coast and plateau, the Californians, the New Mexicans, the wild tribes of Mexico and those of Central America. For each group Bancroft summarizes what travelers, missionaries and officials had reported of their appearance, dress, dwellings, food, weapons, government, marriage, religion and burial, with tables of tribal boundaries and a bibliography of hundreds of sources. The work was compiled by a staff under Bancroft's direction, and its length and documentation are its chief value.
