The Metamorphoses of Ovid, Books VIII-XV
This volume completes Henry T. Riley's literal prose translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses, published in 1851 in Bohn's Classical Library, giving Books VIII to XV with his explanatory notes. The second half of the poem contains Daedalus and Icarus, Baucis and Philemon, the death of Hercules, Byblis and Iphis, Orpheus and Eurydice, Pygmalion, Myrrha, Atalanta and the songs of Orpheus, Midas and his ass's ears, the Trojan War and the quarrel of Ajax and Ulysses over the arms of Achilles, Polyphemus and Galatea, the voyage of Aeneas, Romulus and the early kings of Rome, the teaching of Pythagoras and the deification of Caesar. Riley's version was long the standard aid for students reading the Latin. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
