Publius Ovidius Naso (43 BC–AD 17 or 18) was a Roman poet of the age of Augustus, born at Sulmo in the Abruzzi. He abandoned a legal career for verse and made his name with the Amores, the Heroides and the Art of Love, witty and worldly poems about seduction. The Metamorphoses, his epic of transformations from the creation to Julius Caesar, and the Fasti, a calendar of Roman festivals, were nearly finished when in AD 8 Augustus banished him to Tomis on the Black Sea for reasons he never explained. He died there, having written the Tristia and Letters from Pontus begging for a recall that never came.
