Ars Amatoria, written around the year 1 AD, is Ovid's mock-didactic poem in three books on how to find, win and keep a lover. The first two books advise men, where to look in the theater, the circus and the colonnades of Rome, how to use a letter, a dinner party, flattery and patience; the third, added later, instructs women in dress, hair, make-up, letter-writing and the management of rivals. The poem's cheerful cynicism about Augustan morals was long held to have contributed to Ovid's banishment in 8 AD. This edition gives Henry T. Riley's literal prose translation, first made for the Bohn Classical Library, with his copious notes on the customs, places and myths the poet alludes to. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
