About 8 h 04 min of reading46 chapters

The Life of Friedrich Schiller, first published in book form in 1825, was Thomas Carlyle's first substantial work and one of the first full accounts of Schiller in English. In three parts Carlyle follows the poet from his youth under the harsh discipline of the Duke of Württemberg's military academy and the sensation of The Robbers, through his years at Mannheim, Leipzig and Dresden, to his settlement at Jena and Weimar, his friendship with Goethe and his death in 1805. He examines each of the plays and major poems, with long translated passages from Don Carlos, Wallenstein and The Maid of Orleans. This edition includes Carlyle's 1872 supplement on new information about Schiller's family. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
