Sartor Resartus: The Life and Opinions of Herr Teufelsdröckh

by Thomas Carlyle

About 5 h 22 min of reading37 chapters

Sartor Resartus, which first appeared in Fraser's Magazine in 1833 and 1834, pretends to be an English editor's account of a German treatise on clothes by one Diogenes Teufelsdröckh, professor of Things in General at the University of Weissnichtwo, together with fragments of the professor's life rescued from paper bags. The clothes philosophy holds that all institutions, creeds and bodies are garments over an invisible reality, and the biography carries its hero from the Everlasting No through the Centre of Indifference to the Everlasting Yea. Thomas Carlyle's prose, knotted, exclamatory and full of invented words, baffled early readers and later made disciples. The book is a satire, a spiritual autobiography and a manifesto at once. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
