The French Revolution: A History
Thomas Carlyle's French Revolution, published in 1837 after the only manuscript of the first volume had been accidentally burned and rewritten from memory, is history as epic. Its three volumes, The Bastille, The Constitution, and The Guillotine, run from the death of Louis XV in 1774 to Napoleon's whiff of grapeshot in 1795, and Carlyle writes them in the present tense, in a prose of exclamation, apostrophe and nickname that was unlike anything before it. The fall of the Bastille, the flight to Varennes, the September massacres, the trial of the king, Charlotte Corday, and the fall of Robespierre are rendered as scenes witnessed rather than events recorded. Dickens kept the book by him while writing A Tale of Two Cities. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
