The second volume of Sir Edward Cook's Life of Florence Nightingale, published in 1913, covers the years from 1862 to her death in 1910, the half century after the Crimea in which she did most of her work while largely confined to her rooms in London. Cook, who had access to her papers, describes her campaign for the health of the British army in India and her alliance with Sir Bartle Frere, her unofficial role as adviser to the War Office, workhouse and hospital reform, the Nightingale School of nursing, her writings on religion, her friendships and quarrels, and the long old age in which honors arrived for a woman who had vanished from public view. It is the standard biography. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
