The Life of Florence Nightingale, vol. 1 of 2
The first volume of Sir Edward Cook's Life of Florence Nightingale, published in 1913, covers the years 1820 to 1861. Cook had the use of the papers Nightingale left at her death, and he follows her from a childhood divided between Derbyshire and Hampshire through the frustration of a wealthy daughter forbidden to work, her religious searching, a winter in Rome, travels in Egypt and Greece, and the training at Kaiserswerth that finally set her course. The volume then covers the Crimean War, the hospitals at Scutari and her rise to fame, before turning to the years of work on army medical reform that followed her return. It remains the fullest account of her early and middle life. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
