The life and times of the Rev. Samuel Wesley
Rector of Epworth and father of the Revs. John and Charles Wesley, the founders of the Methodists
Samuel Wesley, rector of Epworth in Lincolnshire, is remembered as the father of John and Charles Wesley, the founders of Methodism, and this biography by Luke Tyerman, published in 1866, tells his story in full. Tyerman traces Samuel's Dissenting family background, his schooling and his decision to join the Church of England, his years at Oxford, his ordination and marriage to Susanna Annesley, his work on the Athenian Gazette and his poems, and his long, poor and often stormy ministry at Epworth, including the burning of the rectory. He sets his subject against the politics and religious conflicts of the late Stuart and early Hanoverian age.
