The life and times of the Rev. John Wesley, M.A., founder of the Methodists. Vol. 2 (of 3)
Luke Tyerman, a Methodist minister and historian, published his three-volume Life and Times of John Wesley in 1870 and 1871, drawing extensively on Wesley's journals, letters and the controversial literature of the period. This second volume covers the years from 1748 to 1767, arranged year by year: Wesley's ceaseless preaching journeys through England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, the mobs that attacked the early Methodists, his marriage, the building of chapels and the organization of societies and conferences, his disputes with Calvinists and Anglican critics, and the growth of the movement into a national force. Tyerman admires Wesley but does not hide his faults or the conflicts within Methodism. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
