The Last Days of Pompeii, published in 1834 by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, is a historical novel set in the Roman city in the months before the eruption of Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Glaucus, a young Athenian, falls in love with the beautiful Ione, but her guardian Arbaces, a sinister Egyptian priest of Isis, wants her for himself. Around them move Nydia, a blind flower girl secretly devoted to Glaucus, early Christians, gladiators, a witch and the pleasure-loving citizens of Pompeii. Bulwer-Lytton draws on the excavations to recreate daily life, building toward a long description of the eruption. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
