Alice, or the Mysteries — Complete
The novel opens in a Devonshire cottage by the sea where two women sit at a window on an April evening, one of them a lady of quiet beauty with a sorrow in her past. She is Alice Darvil, the peasant girl whom the hero of Ernest Maltravers loved and lost, and this sequel, published in 1838, follows her fortunes and those of Maltravers himself, the heiress Evelyn Cameron and the scheming Lumley Ferrers through eleven books of politics, love and inheritance. Edward Bulwer-Lytton intended the two novels as a single study of a man's moral education and considered Alice the better of the pair. It can be read on its own, though it rewards knowing the first. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
