Paul Clifford — Complete
Paul Clifford, first published in 1830, is the novel that opens with the sentence "It was a dark and stormy night." Its hero is raised in a London public house, wrongly imprisoned as a boy, and comes out of jail a highwayman who robs the rich on the roads of England under the name Captain Lovett. Bulwer-Lytton gives him wit, courage and a love for the heiress Lucy Brandon, and a gang of talkative thieves whose slang and songs are part of the fun. Behind the adventure runs an argument against the criminal law of the day, which the author believed manufactured the criminals it hanged. The book was a great popular success and started the fashion for Newgate novels. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
