The Landloper: The Romance of a Man on Foot
A young man who calls himself Walker Farr walks the roads of Maine with no destination, well spoken and plainly educated but dressed like a tramp and refusing every offer of work. In the mill city of Marion he stops long enough to notice that the water company is selling the poor typhoid in their taps, and his anger pulls him into the town's politics, its labor troubles and its boardrooms. He is a man with a past he will not explain, and Kate Kilgour, a daughter of the city's wealthy class, wants to understand him. Published in 1915, Holman Day's novel combines a Progressive-era reform plot with the local color of the Maine he wrote about all his life. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
