Captain Boyd Mayo, a young Maine coasting skipper, is hired to command the yacht of the financier Julius Marston and finds himself in love with Marston's daughter Polly, which is a position with no future for a man of his class. A storm, a wreck and a dishonorable demand from his employer strip him of his command and his good name. He ends up among the wreckers and fishermen of the outer islands, where he finds a cause worth fighting for and a way back. Holman Day published this novel in 1916, taking its title from the old sea shanty, and filled it with the salt-water detail he knew from the Maine coast: schooners, salvage, fog and the hard economics of men who live by the sea.
