The Interpretation of Dreams

by Sigmund Freud

Translated by A. A. BrillAbout 13 h 45 min of reading55 chapters

The Interpretation of Dreams, published in 1899 with the date 1900 on its title page, is the book in which Sigmund Freud laid the foundations of psychoanalysis. Beginning with a survey of earlier theories and the analysis of one of his own dreams, he argues that every dream is the fulfillment of a wish, usually disguised; that the dream we remember is a censored version of unconscious thoughts, transformed by condensation, displacement and symbolism; and that interpretation can trace the way back. The long final chapter sketches a theory of the mind that the rest of his work would develop. A. A. Brill's translation, first published in 1913, introduced the book to English readers and is given here. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
