Psychopathology of Everyday Life
Psychopathology of Everyday Life, published in German in 1901 and in A. A. Brill's authorized English translation in 1914, is the book in which Sigmund Freud carried the methods of psychoanalysis out of the consulting room into ordinary behavior. Starting from his own failure to recall the name of the painter Signorelli, he examines the forgetting of proper names and foreign words, slips of the tongue and pen, misreadings, mislaid objects, bungled actions and the small symptomatic gestures people make without noticing, arguing in each case that an unconscious wish has interfered. A final chapter on determinism, chance and superstition states the principle behind the examples. It is the source of the phrase "Freudian slip." The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
