The House of the Wolfings
A Tale of the House of the Wolfings and All the Kindreds of the Mark Written in Prose and in Verse
The House of the Wolfings, published in 1889, is William Morris's tale of a Gothic tribe living in the forest clearings of the Mark in the age when Rome was pushing north. When the Romans come, the Wolfings and their kindred gather for war under Thiodolf, whose lover, the half-divine Wood-Sun, gives him a dwarf-forged hauberk that will keep him from death at the price of his loyalty to his people. Written in prose with long passages of verse, in an archaic English of Morris's own making, the book celebrates a free community bound by kinship rather than kings. Tolkien acknowledged it as an influence on The Lord of the Rings. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
