News from Nowhere; Or, An Epoch of Rest
Being Some Chapters from a Utopian Romance
News from Nowhere, first serialized in 1890 in Commonweal, the paper of the Socialist League, is William Morris's utopian romance. After a heated meeting about what will follow the revolution, the narrator, William Guest, falls asleep in his house by the Thames at Hammersmith and wakes in a future England where money, private property, prisons and central government have vanished, the factories and slums have gone, and people work for the pleasure of making things well. Guided by new friends, he travels up the river through a green and beautiful country toward the upper Thames. Written partly in answer to the mechanized utopia of Edward Bellamy, it is a gentle and moving vision of a society transformed by fellowship and art.
