The Evolution of Man

About 14 h 20 min of reading34 chapters

The Evolution of Man is the English translation of Anthropogenie, the work in which the German biologist Ernst Haeckel, Darwin's most vigorous champion on the Continent, set out the development of the human being from the egg and the descent of the species from earlier forms. First published in 1874, it treats embryology and the history of the race side by side, since Haeckel held that the growth of the individual repeats the evolution of its ancestors. He follows the human embryo stage by stage, compares it with those of other vertebrates, and reconstructs the line of descent from single-celled organisms through fishes, amphibians and early mammals to the apes and man. The book was controversial for its materialism. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
