Report on the Radiolaria Collected by H.M.S. Challenger During the Years 1873-1876, Second Part: Subclass Osculosa; Index
Report on the Scientific Results of the Voyage of H.M.S. Challenger During the Years 1873-76, Vol. XVIII
This is the second part of Ernst Haeckel's Report on the Radiolaria, the eighteenth zoological volume of the results of the Challenger expedition of 1873 to 1876, published in 1887. It covers the subclass Osculosa, that is the legions Nassellaria and Phaeodaria, arranged by order, family, subfamily and genus with diagnoses and descriptions of species, and it closes with the index to the whole report. The Nassellaria, with their bell- and helmet-shaped skeletons, and the Phaeodaria, with their hollow spines and pigment masses, include many of the forms that made Haeckel's plates celebrated. Like the first part, it is a work of systematic zoology, written for specialists but remarkable as a record of a decade's labor on the smallest of animals.
