The Report on the Radiolaria is the eighteenth zoological volume of the scientific results of the Challenger expedition, which sounded and sampled the world's oceans between 1873 and 1876. Ernst Haeckel, who had already devoted a monograph to these single-celled marine organisms with their intricate silica skeletons, spent a decade on the material and published his report in 1887. This first part covers the legion Spumellaria and the Acantharia, organized by order, family and subfamily, with diagnoses of each group, descriptions of species new and old, and a classification of his own devising. The text is systematic and dense; the organisms described are among the most elaborate forms in nature, and Haeckel's accompanying plates became famous. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
