The Diary and Letters of Madame D'Arblay — Volume 1
Frances Burney kept a diary for most of her life, and it is one of the liveliest records of eighteenth-century English society. This first volume, covering 1778 to 1787 and prefaced by Lord Macaulay's essay on her, opens with the anonymous publication of her first novel, Evelina, and the sudden fame that followed once her authorship was known. Burney is welcomed at Streatham by Mrs. Thrale, talks with Dr. Johnson, meets Sir Joshua Reynolds, Sheridan and the bluestockings, and records it all with a novelist's ear for dialogue and a shy observer's eye for absurdity. Notes by W. C. Ward identify the many people she describes. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
