About 23 h 48 min of reading142 chapters

Camilla, or A Picture of Youth, published by subscription in 1796, is Fanny Burney's third novel and her longest; the young Jane Austen was among the subscribers. Camilla Tyrold, the warm and impulsive daughter of a country clergyman, loves and is loved by Edgar Mandlebert, but Edgar, advised by a suspicious tutor, keeps watching her for faults instead of declaring himself, and a long chain of misunderstandings, debts and social mistakes follows. Around them Burney sets a large cast, including Camilla's generous, muddled uncle Sir Hugh and her learned sister Eugenia, scarred by smallpox. The novel is an extended study of how the young are judged. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
