Evelina, published anonymously in 1778, made Fanny Burney famous almost overnight. Told in letters, it follows a seventeen-year-old raised in country seclusion by her guardian, the clergyman Mr. Villars, as she enters London society for the first time. Evelina blunders through assemblies, theaters and pleasure gardens, is pursued by the persistent Sir Clement Willoughby, embarrassed by vulgar relations and a domineering grandmother, and admired by the courteous Lord Orville, while the mystery of her birth waits to be resolved. Burney's sharp ear for social absurdity and her comic set pieces influenced the novel of manners from Jane Austen onward.
