The complete works of John Gower, volume 3
This third volume of G. C. Macaulay's edition of The Complete Works of John Gower, published in 1901, completes the Confessio Amantis, the long English poem that Gower, Chaucer's friend and contemporary, finished around 1390. It contains the second half of Book V, on avarice, and Books VI, VII and VIII, in which the lover confesses to the priest Genius, who answers each sin with exemplary tales drawn from Ovid, the Bible and medieval romance, including the story of Apollonius of Tyre that Shakespeare later used for Pericles. Book VII is a treatise on the education of a king. The volume also includes the short poem In Praise of Peace, addressed to Henry IV, with Macaulay's notes, glossary and index of names. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
