This is the second of the four volumes of G. C. Macaulay's edition of the complete works of John Gower, published between 1899 and 1902 and still the standard text. It contains the Prologue and the first five books of the Confessio Amantis, Gower's long English poem of the 1390s, in which a lover confesses to Genius, the priest of Venus, and is instructed through more than a hundred stories drawn from Ovid, the Bible, romance and chronicle, arranged under the seven deadly sins. Macaulay's introduction treats the manuscripts, the poem's two dedications, to Richard II and then to Henry of Lancaster, and Gower's language and meter, and the text is followed by notes. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
