The complete works of John Gower, volume 1
This first volume of G. C. Macaulay's Oxford edition of John Gower, the friend and contemporary of Chaucer, contains his works in French. The largest is the Mirour de l'Omme, or Speculum Hominis, a long moral poem on the vices and virtues and the corruption of every estate of society, which survives in a single manuscript that Macaulay himself identified at Cambridge in the 1890s. It is followed by the Cinkante Balades, a sequence of love lyrics, and the Traitié, ballades on the dignity of marriage. Macaulay's introduction, notes and glossary make this edition the standard text of Gower's French poetry. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
