The Chronicle of the Discovery and Conquest of Guinea. Vol. II
Gomes Eannes de Zurara, royal chronicler of Portugal, completed his Chronicle of the Discovery and Conquest of Guinea in the 1450s, recording the voyages sent by Prince Henry down the coast of West Africa. This second volume of the Hakluyt Society translation by Charles Raymond Beazley and Edgar Prestage continues the narrative from chapter forty-one: raids on the coast to seize captives, the voyages to the land of the Negroes and to the river the Portuguese believed to be the Nile, the fleet from Lagos under Lançarote, and the deaths of crews on the islands. Zurara writes as a courtier praising the prince, and his frankness about the slave trade makes the book a grim historical document.
