The Chronicle of the Discovery and Conquest of Guinea. Vol. I
The Chronicle of the Discovery and Conquest of Guinea was written in the 1450s by the Portuguese royal chronicler Gomes Eanes de Zurara to record the voyages sent down the African coast by Prince Henry the Navigator. This first volume of the Hakluyt Society translation by C. Raymond Beazley and Edgar Prestage covers the first forty chapters: Henry's character, the passing of Cape Bojador, the voyages to the Rio de Ouro and Cape Branco, and the first raids that brought African captives to Portugal. Zurara writes as a court historian praising his patron, yet his account of the division of captives at Lagos in 1444 records his own pity, and it is an early document of the Atlantic slave trade. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
