Gomes Eannes de Zurara (c. 1410–1474) was a Portuguese chronicler who succeeded Fernão Lopes as keeper of the royal archive in the Torre do Tombo and served as official historian to King Afonso V. His chronicles celebrate the house of Avis and its expansion overseas: the capture of Ceuta in 1415, the deeds of the governors who held it, and the voyages that Prince Henry, later called the Navigator, sent down the coast of Africa. The Chronicle of the Discovery and Conquest of Guinea, finished in the 1450s, is the main source for those voyages and an early, uneasy witness to the beginnings of the Atlantic slave trade.
