The Apostolic Tradition is a church order attributed to Hippolytus of Rome and dated to about 215 AD. It sets out how bishops, presbyters and deacons are to be ordained, with the prayers to be said over them; gives one of the earliest surviving texts of a eucharistic prayer; regulates widows, readers, virgins and healers; and describes in detail how converts are to be instructed, examined, exorcised and baptized at Easter. Few documents tell so much about Christian worship before Constantine. This edition is the translation of Burton Scott Easton, with an introduction that places the work among the other ancient church orders and notes that compare the Latin, Coptic, Arabic and Ethiopic witnesses. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
