Philosophumena; or, The refutation of all heresies, Volume I
The Philosophumena, or Refutation of All Heresies, is an early Christian work, once attributed to Origen and now generally to Hippolytus of Rome, written around the early third century to show that the heresies of the day derived from pagan philosophy and magic. Its manuscript was rediscovered in the nineteenth century. This first volume of Francis Legge's translation, published in 1921, opens with an introduction on the text and its authorship, followed by the survey of Greek philosophers from Thales to the Stoics and Epicureans, with the Brahmans and the Druids, and a book on astrologers, diviners and magicians. It goes on to the Gnostic sects, whose teachings the work preserves in unusual detail. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
