Hippolytus of Rome (c. 170–235) was a Christian theologian and presbyter, a learned writer of the Roman church. He wrote in Greek against the heresies of his day, notably in the Refutation of All Heresies, and composed commentaries, chronicles and the church order known as the Apostolic Tradition, which describes ordination, baptism and the Eucharist as practiced in the early third century. He broke with Bishop Callistus over doctrine and discipline, and some sources count him as the head of a rival congregation, hence the label antipope. Exiled to the mines of Sardinia under Maximinus, he died there and was afterward venerated as a martyr and saint.
