Sybil, or The Two Nations, published in 1845, is the second novel of Benjamin Disraeli's Young England trilogy, written while he was a rising Tory member of Parliament. The "two nations" are the rich and the poor, who live side by side in England in complete ignorance of each other. Charles Egremont, younger brother of a hard-hearted earl, travels the industrial north under a false name and falls in love with Sybil Gerard, daughter of a Chartist leader, who believes the gulf between the classes cannot be crossed. Disraeli drew on parliamentary reports for his scenes of handloom weavers, miners and Chartist agitation, and he joins political argument to romance.
