Henrietta Temple: A Love Story

by Benjamin Disraeli

About 9 h 35 min of reading81 chapters

Henrietta Temple, published in 1837, is Disraeli's most straightforward romance. Ferdinand Armine, heir to an ancient Catholic family burdened with debt, is expected to repair the family fortunes by marrying his cousin Katherine Grandison. On a visit home he meets Henrietta Temple, falls in love at once and becomes secretly engaged to her, while concealing from each woman the existence of the other. The exposure of the double engagement, Ferdinand's arrest for debt and the maneuvering of friends and relatives to untangle the mess occupy the second half. Disraeli draws on his own financial troubles and his affair with Henrietta Sykes, and the dandified Count Mirabel is one of his liveliest comic creations. London society and the sponging house are described with equal familiarity. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
