Alroy, or The Prince of the Captivity, published in 1833, is a historical romance by Benjamin Disraeli, begun after a visit to Jerusalem in 1831. In the twelfth century, under the decaying Caliphate, David Alroy, a young descendant of the house of David living in exile under Muslim rule, rises to lead the Jews in a struggle for national restoration. Guided by a mystic teacher, he finds the sacred scepter of Solomon, wins battles and conquers Baghdad, but power, love and a foreign princess test his faith. Written in rich, rhythmic prose, it reflects the young Disraeli's interest in his Jewish heritage.
