Summa Theologica, Part II-II (Secunda Secundae)
Translated by Fathers of the English Dominican Province
The Secunda Secundae is the second part of the second part of the Summa Theologica, the summary of Christian theology that Thomas Aquinas composed between 1265 and 1274, here in the translation of the Fathers of the English Dominican Province. Having treated the principles of human action in the Prima Secundae, Aquinas now examines the virtues and vices in detail. He takes up the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity, then prudence, justice with its many parts, including questions on murder, theft, lying, usury and war, fortitude and temperance, and closes with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the states of life and the contemplative and active lives. Each question proceeds by objections, authorities and replies in the scholastic method. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
