Studies in the Psychology of Sex, Volume 6
Sex in Relation to Society
Sex in Relation to Society, published in 1910, is the sixth volume of Havelock Ellis's Studies in the Psychology of Sex and the one in which, having examined the sexual impulse in the individual, he turns to its social setting. Its chapters treat the mother and her child, sexual education and the question of nakedness, the valuation of sexual love, chastity and the problem of abstinence, prostitution, the conquest of the venereal diseases, sexual morality, marriage, the art of love and the science of procreation, with a postscript. Ellis writes as a physician and reformer, drawing on anthropology, literature and medical reports, and his cool treatment of subjects then unmentionable made the Studies a landmark. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
