Studies in the Psychology of Sex, Volume 5
Erotic Symbolism; The Mechanism of Detumescence; The Psychic State in Pregnancy
Studies in the Psychology of Sex, Volume 5, published by Havelock Ellis in 1906, contains three of the studies that make up his seven-volume work. Erotic Symbolism examines the ways in which sexual feeling attaches itself to objects, parts of the body, articles of clothing and acts that have no reproductive purpose, with Ellis's usual wealth of historical and anthropological illustration. The Mechanism of Detumescence is a physiological account of the sexual act itself. The Psychic State in Pregnancy describes the mental and emotional changes of pregnancy as reported by women and physicians. Ellis writes as a physician and a humane observer, and his books, long restricted to medical readers in Britain, did much to make the subject discussable.
