Studies in the Psychology of Sex, Volume 2
Sexual Inversion
Sexual Inversion is the second volume of Havelock Ellis's Studies in the Psychology of Sex, here in the third edition of 1915, revised and enlarged. First published in 1897 after the death of its co-author John Addington Symonds, it was prosecuted in England and thereafter issued only abroad. Ellis surveys homosexuality in history and across cultures, presents detailed case histories of men and women, many written by the subjects themselves, and argues that inversion is a congenital variation rather than a vice or a disease, to be understood rather than punished. Chapters on its nature and theory are followed by appendices on homosexuality among tramps and on the school friendships of girls. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
