Society and solitude: Twelve chapters
Society and Solitude, published in 1870, is the last collection of essays Ralph Waldo Emerson assembled himself, drawn largely from lectures he had given over the preceding decade. The twelve chapters are Society and Solitude, Civilization, Art, Eloquence, Domestic Life, Farming, Works and Days, Books, Clubs, Courage, Success and Old Age. The manner is looser and more genial than in the early essays; Emerson talks about reading lists, the pleasures of conversation, the economy of a household and the compensations of growing old, and the chapter on Works and Days, with its reflections on tools and on the day as the measure of a life, is often counted among his best. He was sixty-six when the book appeared. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
