Representative Men: Seven Lectures
Representative Men, published in 1850, collects the lectures Ralph Waldo Emerson gave in Boston in 1845 and 1846 and repeated in England two years later. After an opening lecture on the uses of great men, he takes six figures as types: Plato, or the Philosopher; Swedenborg, or the Mystic; Montaigne, or the Skeptic; Shakespeare, or the Poet; Napoleon, or the Man of the World; and Goethe, or the Writer. Each man stands for a power of the human mind, is praised for it and then judged for its limits, so that Napoleon becomes the idol of the middle class and Swedenborg the seer who could not take a joke. The book answers Carlyle's heroes with a democrat's version. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
