It begins in the Alps and the snows of Davos, where Symonds spent his later life, crosses Provence and the Riviera, and descends through Lombardy, Ferrara, Parma and the towns of the Apennines to Rome, Orvieto, Amalfi, Paestum and Capri, ending in Sicily and Athens. Landscape, painting, architecture and Renaissance biography mingle with essays on Lucretius and Antinous; the manner is lingering and personal.
