by John Addington Symonds

Italian Literature, Part 1

About 10 h 38 min of reading42 chapters

This fourth volume of John Addington Symonds's Renaissance in Italy is the first of the two devoted to Italian literature. Symonds begins with the origins of Italian verse and the three writers he calls the triumvirate, Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio, then follows the transition of the fifteenth century, the popular secular and religious poetry of the streets and confraternities, and the poets of the Medici circle, Lorenzo de' Medici and Poliziano. The last chapters treat the romantic epic of Pulci, Boiardo and Ariosto. Appendices give Symonds's own verse translations from Folgore da San Gemignano, Jacopone da Todi and Pulci's Morgante. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
