Renaissance in Italy, Volume 1 (of 7)
The Age of the Despots
The Age of the Despots, published in 1875, is the first volume of John Addington Symonds's Renaissance in Italy, the fullest treatment of the subject in English in the nineteenth century. After a chapter on the spirit of the Renaissance and a sketch of Italian history, it examines the tyrants who seized the cities, the Visconti, Sforza, Este and their like, the republics of Florence and Venice, the Florentine historians Machiavelli and Guicciardini and the argument of The Prince, the popes from Nicholas V to Alexander VI, the relation of the Church to morality, the preaching and fall of Savonarola and the invasion of Charles VIII in 1494 that ended Italian independence. Appendices and an index close the volume. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
