Seneca's Morals of a Happy Life, Benefits, Anger and Clemency
Seneca's Morals of a Happy Life, Benefits, Anger and Clemency is the version of the Roman Stoic made by Sir Roger L'Estrange, the Restoration pamphleteer and censor, in 1678, and for a century and a half the form in which English readers knew Seneca. L'Estrange does not translate so much as digest, rearranging Seneca's treatises On Benefits, On a Happy Life, On Anger and On Clemency and extracts from the letters into chapters with his own vigorous headings, and adding a short life of the author. The result is a handbook of Stoic ethics in colloquial seventeenth-century prose on the passions, adversity, favors and the duties of rulers. Franklin read Seneca in this form.
